Conifer Ridge Botanical Gardens is a division of Yadkin Valley Nursery Company.

Yadkin Valley Nursery Company started in July 1976 with an 82-acre tract of land and a 6-acre spring and creek fed lake. The nursery with roads and production space covers approx. 25 acres with a 10 acre expansion planned sometime in the near future. A civil engineer laid out all production space in phases. All areas were planned ahead of time to insure proper utilization of space, resources and also to control waste as much as possible. In the late 70’s we purchased a collection of dwarf conifers from Martin Doll in Western North Carolina. We had little knowledge of what we had received. Most of the plants we first acquired started from his collection and we still continue to grow these 20+ years later.

Landscaping for the first 17 years assisted cash flow for the nursery during the formative years. We were registered landscape contractors with experience in commercial and high -end residential work.

Our main thrust has always been to find, procure, and grow the weird, unusual, rare, and even difficult to propagate plants. We have been proud to have great friends in the nursery industry as well as nationally known arboretums in the United States that have been very generous with seed, cuttings and scion wood for our research and testing. Without these institutions it would be very difficult to release new and exciting varieties and cultivars.

“C.C.R.” or “Conifer Ridge Research” is our evaluation arm of Yadkin Valley Nursery Company. We are even reaching out to our overseas neighbors in Europe and Japan and Asia to try to secure little known plants from those regions for testing and possible production.

Since we propagate and grow some really unusual plants from all over the world we very quickly realized that we needed to research and test them ourselves. We have approximately 4 acres of Gardens for evaluation. Also we needed to get this information our to the customers. From the beginning of our career in 1976, we printed information about each plant in our catalog not just listing the plant as many others do. Our customers needed information on how to grow, how it performs, and many other features on the plant to insure it does as expected…

Our facilities include a modern, environmentally sound 3-acre propagation and liner division. We propagate approximately 95 % of our own materials, either thru seed, cutting or grafting depending on the selection. In most cases we raise most of our own under-stock to use in the grafting department.

Our sales mostly delivered by our own drivers and equipment cover around 20 states from Florida to southern New England and westward to Oklahoma and up into Wisconsin. All of our products are container grown. Our main marketing thrust is to sell a 5-gallon sized plant. We sell 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10-gallon sizes depending on the species. We also produce a selection of topiary or “trained” plants for container use or in rock gardens or specialty sites. When we select a species for production, we are normally looking for one of these features.

  1. Dwarf or slow growing
  2. Rarity
  3. Difficult to propagate
  4. Ability for topiary work
  5. Ability for shade work
  6. One of the most important aspects- Disease, Insect, Hardiness, Heat resistance, Durability
  7. Unusual shape, texture, color, or habit in form or leaf shape.

It is our greatest inspiration to bring to our customers,

The Unique and Proven Plants

Which are produced here at Yadkin Valley Nursery Company!

Thus stating: “BETTER PLANTS THROUGH RESEARCH!”
